Enemies to lovers, cupcakes and a hot, plaid wearing love interest? That’s what Kiss My Cupcake promised and oh boy did it deliver. This was only my second ever Helena Hunting book, and it definitely won’t be my last.
Blaire Calloway has planned every Instagram-worthy moment of her cupcake and cocktails shop launch down to the tiniest detail. What she didn’t plan on? Ronan Knight and his old-school sports bar next door opening on the very same day. He may be super swoony, but Blaire hasn’t spent years obsessing over buttercream and bourbon to have him ruin her chance at success.
From axe throwing (his place) to frosting contests (hers), Blaire and Ronan are constantly trying to one-up each other in a battle to win new customers. But with every clash, there’s also an undeniable chemistry. When an even bigger threat to their business comes to town, they’re forced to call a temporary time-out on their own war and work together. And the more time Blaire spends getting to know the real Ronan, the more she wonders if it’s possible to have her cupcake and eat it too.
This was a very quick read – the plot gets going fast and it was hard to put the book down. The rivalry between Blaire and Ronan was hilarious and infuriating at times and it was definitely addicting. The one thing I didn’t love about this book was that some of the dialog felt forced and a bit over the top. Outside of that, this was a well written and well paced book, perfect for a cozy weekend read.
Kiss my Cupcake was a true enemies-to-lovers book – Blaire and Ronan were business rivals that were not afraid to go at each other’s throats. They were competing for a best bar award – and butted heads constantly. I really enjoyed the little pranks they pulled on each other (and that cupcake at the bachelorette party? unffff). As they started to get to know each other better, they thawed towards each other and began to acknowledge their chemistry and feelings. When they finally acted on those feelings? Perfection. I loved them together – they helped each other grow – Ronan helped to ground Blaire and Blaire helped Ronan broaden his perspective.
Don’t read Kiss My Cupcake on an empty stomach – it’s best paired with gourmet cupcakes and fancy cocktails or pub food and a good craft beer. Did I DoorDash cupcakes while reading this book? Abso-freakin-lutely. I can’t wait to read more books by Helena Hunting – her characters are charming and her storytelling is addictive. If you haven’t yet, I recommend you check out her other book, Meet Cute. 4/5
